Master the art of flash photography and take creative control of light in any outdoor setting. This one-to-one workshop at Walkden Gardens, Sale will teach you how to use off-camera flash to shape light, balance it with ambient conditions, and create striking, professional-quality images.
Using public sculpture artwork as your models for the day, you’ll gain hands-on experience in controlling both artificial and natural light, learning how each affects mood, texture, and depth in your images. This practical, outdoor session is designed to help you build a strong technical foundation while encouraging creativity and experimentation.
During the workshop, you’ll learn how to:
Set up and use off-camera flash effectively in an outdoor environment
Balance flash and ambient light for natural-looking results
Understand and apply the inverse square law to control light fall-off
Explore the differences between hard light and soft light
Use diffusion techniques to soften and shape light creatively
Refine your exposure and flash settings for different lighting scenarios
By the end of the session, you’ll have the confidence and technical knowledge to use off-camera flash creatively and effectively - opening up a whole new world of lighting possibilities in your photography.
📍 Location: Walkden Gardens, Sale, Greater Manchester (easily accessible via the M60, bus, or Metrolink)
📷 Equipment required: Camera, lenses, flash/speedlight, and off-camera trigger. Fully charged batteries and plenty of memory card space are essential. Tripod recommended but not essential.
